THE GOVERNOR'S KNOWLEDGE OF THE COUNTRY,
To The Editor of the Gleaner.
Sir,-In your leading article of Saturday last, referring to some very uncalled for remarks of the Parochial Board of St. James, you say that I have "made a great mistake in not travelling to a larger extent over the colony."
You would not, I am sure, make a wild or misrepresentation, and you are therefore, no doubt, unaware that, before my recent tour, I had already visited every one of the parishes, and several of them more than once, and that I have driven and ridden over a great part of the Island.
It is true that the majority of these visits have not been official ones, but I am of opinion that it is frequently more useful and instructive for a Governor to travel unofficially, and talk to the people, as I have often done, than to make a state progress with all the formalities of receptions, addresses, speeches, etc., though I do not deny that these are proper and desirable on occasions.
-Yours faithfully,
A. W. L. HEMMING,
